Gokarna on banks of Arabian sea, literally means  Cow’s Ear, is a temple town in the Uttara Kannada district of the Karnataka, india It is with four of India's most secluded and pristine beaches nestled nearby. It attracks both pious pilgrims and hedonistic holiday makers with equal enthusiasm. It seems that travelling to  Gokarna to get a feel for what Goa was like in its heyday, although time is limited as Tourism developrrs are already seeing the potential of this area.According to Hindu mythology, Cow has a special religious staus as Mother Earth.


According to belief,  Lord Rudra (another name for Shiva) was sent to Patalaloka by Brahma (the creator) to undergo penance and  eventually emerged from the ear of a cow named Prithvi, the synonym of the Mother Earth, and so the name of Gokarna. Thus Gokarna served Rudra as a womb and so, this place is also known as Rudra Yoni and Adi Gokarna. In fact, Gokarna is placed at the ear-shaped confluence of two rivers Gangavali and Aghanashini, a natural picturesque scene nobody will ever forget.

Gokarna is a temple town  as well as a holiday destination of those who want to explore the cultural heritage and beauty of India. Gokarna is reffered  in a number of Hindu historical literatures. 

Gokarna is considered as Mukti Stala, the place where Hindus come to perform their obsequies, after the death of a relative. Gokarna is also refered in the Shrimad Bhagawat Purana as being the home of the two brothers Dhundhakari. And Gokarna
